Two IJGA athletes had outstanding performances at the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Championship and the South American Amateur tournaments.
Evan Pena Wins the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Championship.
Fifteen-year-old Evan Pena, hailing from Puerto Rico, made history as the first home player to clinch victory at the AJGA Puerto Rico Junior Championship.
He achieved this milestone with an impressive 4-under-par total of 212 at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande. This win marked Evan’s inaugural triumph in three AJGA starts.
He expressed his excitement, stating, “Winning this event in Puerto Rico, where I’m from, means so much to me. I am super excited for this day, and I can’t wait for many more wins to come.”
Gerardo Gomez Wins Silver in South American Amateur
Meanwhile, Evan’s fellow housemate at IJGA, Gerardo Gomez, was on the brink of making his mark in history, aiming to follow in the footsteps of IJGA student Julian Perico by winning the South American Amateur.
Despite an impressive 11-under-par score, he ultimately secured the silver medal. Gerardo is set to join the University of Arkansas Razorbacks in August 2024, stepping into the shoes left vacant by Julian, who graduated the previous year. He joins the ranks of IJGA alums alongside John Daly II and Giovanna Fernandez.
