Filip Jakubcik’s 153rd Open Debut

Czech Republic

153rd Open Championship

For most young golfers, playing in The Open Championship is a dream— one imagined during early mornings on the range or late nights watching professionals battle the elements on linksland.

This summer, Filip Jakubcik, IJGA alum from the Czech Republic, lived that dream.

At just 21 years old, Filip stepped onto the first tee at Royal Portrush, the host of the 153rd Open Championship, perched on the rugged northern coast of Northern Ireland.

It’s a venue that demands everything— precision, imagination, patience, and heart. There, Filip took his place among the game’s best: from major champions to world No. 1s.

And though the week came with its share of challenges, his presence in the field alone was a milestone that reflected years of hard, disciplined work.

In a breakout summer, Filip won the European Amateur Championship, one of the most prestigious titles in amateur golf. Winning the event not only brought him international recognition but also an automatic exemption into The Open.

Past champions of the European Amateur include legends like Sergio García and Carl Pettersson— and now, Filip Jakubcik.

Filip handled the pressure of his first major with resilience. In round one, he posted a 75 (+4), battling tough conditions and the nerves of a major debut.

He bounced back with a stronger 73 (+2) in round two, finishing +6 for the championship. Though he narrowly missed the cut, Filip walked away with invaluable experience that will shape his career for years to come!

Filip’s journey is another example of how IJGA prepares young golfers to perform at the highest levels of the sport. From structured training to a supportive community, we provide the foundation for players to succeed on the global stage.
