What Kind of Clothing Should You Wear During a Golf Tournament?

There is an etiquette standard when it comes to the golf dress code.

Professional games like the PGA and LPGA have stringent rules to maintain a certain level of tradition and class. When planning your wardrobe for the next game, use these tips from IJGA or check with the field management or course.

Standard Outfit Choices for Competitors

The standard is usually a collared shirt (cotton, breathable microfiber, or polyester material). Some courses or tournament managers permit golfers to wear turtlenecks.

Generally, men’s or women’s t-shirts and vests are not allowed. The rule of thumb is to dress practically yet professionally.

For the lower half, you can choose pleated or flat-front pants to extend to the knee area. Cotton is a common choice. Some golfers wear pants made of waterproof material in hot or humid climates. Training equipment or sportswear is not approved for men or women in a tournament setting.

What Type of Golf Shoes to Wear

Soft spikes are popular for shoes, so replace the old metal ones with a new pair.

Along with this, most golf courses prohibit metal spikes anyway to protect the greens.

Golf shoes with soft spikes

Most golf shoes now have soft or rubber spikes to help you hold the ground while minimizing damage to the course.

Before buying your shoes, another important factor to consider is slip resistance. This means you should steer clear of open-toed shoes, heels, or smooth-soled shoes of any kind.

What to Wear as a Spectator

Believe it or not, there is also a dress code for golf spectators.

General Guidelines for Women Spectators

Female spectators tend to wear comfortable tennis sneakers with shorts, skorts, or a sundress. To keep comfortable on the course, they’ll also wear wide-edged hats, visors, or sunglasses.

Some things to avoid at all costs are graphic tees, tube tops or strapless garments, Spandex, jeans, heels, or flip-flops. Dress appropriately for the weather while still maintaining a level of etiquette to fit the establishment.

General Guidelines for Male Spectators

Male golf spectator attire is usually khakis or trousers, a golf shirt, an Oxford button shirt, a visor or hat, clean tennis shoes, or loafers. Stay away from gym shorts, cut-offs, or t-shirts.

What to Bring to a Golf Tournament

If you’re planning to spend a day watching golf, the preparation doesn’t stop with the outfit.
