First Aid Issues You May Encounter During a Round by IJGA

For many individuals golfing is a low-impact, non-contact sport. However, daily repetitive motions like swinging a golf club without the proper instruction or form places you at risk of contracting acute or chronic injuries for future games. The IJGA academy training team believes injury prevention is just as important as physical form, especially as a beginner golfer. The two objectives go hand-in-hand, and in today’s blog, we will explore the most common golfing injuries and the best practices to avoid these traumas.

Golfer’s Elbow

Golfer’s elbow, also known as elbow tinnitus, occurs when the inner tendon is injured and inflammation occurs. Tinnitus is one of the most common golfing injuries, and prolonged arm use without treatment or form adjustment may increase harm, especially with age. IJGA recommends using the proper golfing form for prevention. Many training resources are available to help maintain correct golfing shape, and coaches offer direct supervision and any helpful modifications for a better game.

Expected Contributions to Golf Injuries

Common causes behind golfing injuries include but are not limited to:

  • Overuse or Incorrect golf swing
  • Poor club grip and setup
  • Lack of stretching or warm-up beforehand
  • Repetitive rotator stress on the spine
  • Repetitive rotator stress on wrists

Many golfing injuries are preventable with proper technique and instruction. Junior league and even professional golfers can play long-term without the fear of sustained injury or a build-up of bodily damage. IJGA trainers suggest incorporating simple stretch warms-ups that will benefit your game, in the long run, keeping you safe and agile.

Lumbar/Lower Back Pain

Repetitive swinging motions usually cause the onset of back pain. We equip our students with top-of-the-line training and professionals at the IJGA training academy to correct any student mistakes during a round. Specific back exercises are ideal for preventing lumbar pain and assist with core strength, maintenance and balance.

Knee Pain

Knee injuries are common due to the strain placed on the joints to maintain hip stability while rotating the spine for a perfect swing. Slightly bending both knees is ideal when using your joints for any specific reason. Prolonged exposure to locking your knees or extreme force causes degenerative harm to your body and eventually gradual wear and tear of the joint cartilage.

Wrist Injuries

Golfers place a lot of force behind a strong swing. Repeating these swings without the suitable form or wrist guards puts you at risk of acquiring an acute painful injury during a round, and eventually, arthritis with age increases. Between the high-intensity hits and lack of proper wrist exercises, you are likely to experience an injury at one point or another. IJGA offers conditioning pre-season programs to assist with swing mechanisms and appropriate techniques.
