Going to College? Take Your Mental Golf Skills With You for Success

IJGA College Signers Class of 2021 holding college pennants

College is the next big step in your life. How you perform there can lay the groundwork for success for the rest of your life. If you have attended IJGA, then you know that we don’t just teach golf skills. We teach the “how” in how to be a solid, competitive athlete. The idea is that this will transfer into every facet of your life. So, if you’re heading to college, pack your mental toughness with you. IJGA will explain why in today’s blog.

Confident Decision Making

“Sports can do so much. It gives me confidence, self-esteem, discipline, and motivation.” Mia Hamm, first American female international star in soccer.

You’ve spent years learning, learning to control the club and being able to quickly identify the environment around you. All of this culminates into a confident swing.  You’ve learned that you can’t hesitate. You have to trust yourself and your training to move forward. College is no different. The skills you learn at IJGA will allow you to continue your golf career in college and also excel in the classroom.

Perseverance

Multiple tests and papers in one week. Chapters to read. A demanding professor who challenges you. We all want to quit now and then. It’s a natural human reaction when things become difficult or overwhelming.

The difference between a good athlete and a great athlete, and an average student and one who excels, is perseverance.

If you can learn to face adversity and work through an issue to see the result, the more likely you are to not only see success but also learn in the process. This is one of the many lessons we teach at IJGA. We don’t let you quit, but rather teach you how to identify the issue and find ways to solve it. This builds character. Great athletes and leaders all possess the same thing: strong character.

Discipline & Maturity

“It’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. But winning takes a lot more than that. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then it takes desire, determination, discipline, and self-sacrifice. And finally it takes love, fairness, and respect for your fellow man. Put all these together and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?” – Jesse Owens, world-record track and field athlete and gold medalist in the 1936 Olympics.

Perseverance goes hand in hand with discipline. Through developing strong self-discipline comes maturity. This isn’t something that can be achieved overnight, but it is something you continually work on your whole life.

At IJGA, discipline is one core of our fundamentals. You come to us with a passion and a drive, and we will help hone the fundamentals through discipline. This will not only make you a better golfer, but a stronger competitor in the classroom, boardroom, and beyond. A student who possesses strong discipline is more likely to get better grades and excel than those who do not. Beyond the classroom, employees with solid work ethics and strong self-discipline tend to get promoted faster and make more money.

Dedication to Self-Improvement

Perseverance and discipline all work hand in hand with dedication. You have a dedication to the game of golf, but you also need to have a dedication to yourself. This leads to overall and continual self-improvement, which transforms a good athlete into a great one.
