GERARDO GÓMEZ AND MARÍA GARCÍA WON THE XV COPA YUCATÁN / I COPA SURESTE

The trip to Merida Mexico was fun and victorious for the IJGA academy. We emerged the weekend with two winners, Gerardo Gomez in the boys 18& Under and Maria Garcia in the girls 18& Under. The XV Yucatan Cup / I Sureste Cup was the fifth event of the 2021-2022 season of the Junior Mexgolf Tour.

Maria won her division in a playoff which she was forced into on the last day. Sara Tomaszewski fired a 4 under par 68 which tied the girls at a total of 215. They had a sudden death playoff on the 9th hole and Maria claimed the number 1 spot. Garcia finished the tournament 1 under par, with scores of 73-71-71 (215). She spoke on her nerves getting in the way coming down to the end which led her to stumble. However, once she entered the playoff she settled down and mentally overcame her opponent.

Gerardo Gomez blew the field away on the final day shooting a tournament low round 67. He had a two stroke lead going into the last round, but was able to fend off his competitors and come out on top. Gomez finished the event 10 under par with rounds of 70-69-67 (206) and won by 3 strokes. When asked about the win he said “I had the strategy down after the first few days which was to ensure fairways and giving myself close putts”. Gerardo also raved about his support saying,  “I felt very good about all my colleagues from the IJGA academy supporting me and applauding because they made me feel very comfortable on the course”.
