Christian Tupamahu got his start in golf in Indonesia because of his father. A game that started out very frustrating for him, turned into a game that has taught Tupamahu many lessons.
“The game really taught me how to be patient,” said Tupamahu. “You can’t expect everything to go how you want. You need to keep practicing and playing and one day it will pay off.”
Tupamahu’s patience paid off as he’ll be playing golf for the University of the Cumberlands in the fall, with help from the Bishops Gate Golf Academy College Planning & Placement program.
“At first I thought that getting into college, especially to be recruited, was really hard,” said Tupamahu. “When I followed the steps I was taught by the people at BGGA, getting recruited was easy for me. Suddenly, I was receiving emails from coaches saying they wanted me on their team!”
He chose the University of the Cumberlands because of its environment. He plans to earn a degree in engineering.
One of the ways BGGA impacted Tupamahu’s game was on the mental side. He said BGGA taught him how to prepare himself before each shot and to visualize the different situations around each course to adapt to it.
While Tupamahu will enjoy his new college environment, one of the things he’ll miss the most about BGGA is the facility.
“To be honest, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Tupamahu. “Bishops Gate is the best facility I’ve seen in my life. All you need to do if you want to play golf is walk out your house and the golf course is right there.”
Tupamahu has attended BGGA for almost two years and is one of two Indonesian students currently training at the Academy.
