Misseldine Shares Insights on How to Unleash a Child’s Potential
Lee-Anne Misseldine, Managing Director of the International Junior Golf Academy in Bluffton, South Carolina, knows what coaches, parents, and mentors can do to help children be true to themselves, and reach their full potential.
Speaking recently at TEDx HiltonHeadWomen, Misseldine said, “It starts by providing an environment that promotes autonomy and authenticity, as opposed to controls and constraints. She said, “By understanding the power of intrinsic motivation and adjusting behaviors and communication patterns with our children, we can make a significant difference in their interest, level of motivation, and general well-being.”
Often without conscious intention, we place demands and pressures on our children to perform and behave a certain way to meet our expectations. As a result, the number of children who never quite achieve their potential is heartbreaking. Parents and coaches often play a role in this tragedy. “We have a significant impact on the physical, emotional and social development of our children,” said Misseldine. The fear of failure is a big detractor. Knowing it’s okay to fail allows children to take more risks, which promotes growth and development.
Lee-Anne Misseldine is a motivator and educator who has worked with hundreds of young athletes and their parents in the quest for athletic success in college and on the professional tours. She connects with people from all over the world by caring about them, their thoughts and feelings.
