As part of a generous invitation, 10 IJGA students attended the University of North Florida campus for an exclusive tour. Following the tour, the selected students were also invited to take part in the Red Bull Tee Time with Lexi Thompson.
Head UNF coach, Joanne Berglund, and assistant coach, Leslie Grabeman, spoke to IJGA Director of Instruction, Kevin Smeltz and his juniors about college golf and the recruiting process. The IJGA students then had the opportunity to ask questions about what to expect.
Following a break for lunch, two of the UNF women’s golfers guided the IJGA group through campus before heading to the special event. Thompson, LPGA golfer and Puma-sponsored athlete, went pro in 2012 at which time she began racking up noteworthy playing highlights in the earliest phases of her career. The combination of professional success and positive influence have made Thompson a role model to many aspiring female golfers.
Thompson used the session as a way to stay in touch with her fans and allow them the chance to interact with her personally. She answered questions on topics ranging from golf to life for about 45 minutes before heading to the range with those in attendance. Thompson watched the juniors hit golf balls and spoke to each one individually, offering autographs to those who requested them.
In attendance, representing the IJGA was:
Director of Instruction, Kevin Smeltz
As if the day had not offered enough fun-filled activities, the group concluded the short trip with celebrations for Melany Chong’s birthday!
We thank UNF, Coach Berglund, Coach Grabeman, Lexi Thompson, Puma and RedBull for the insightful and inspiring opportunity!
